How much does Stripe charge per transaction?
On standard US pricing, Stripe charges 2.9% + $0.30 per successful online card payment. That means the Stripe fee on $100 is $3.20, on $50 it is $1.75, and on $10 it is $0.59. International cards cost more — 4.4% + $0.30 — and if Stripe converts the currency for you the rate rises to 5.4% + $0.30. In-person payments through Stripe Terminal are cheaper at 2.7% + $0.05. There is no monthly or setup fee on standard pricing.
How it works
Stripe’s standard US pricing is a percentage of the charge plus a fixed fee, taken out of each payment before it reaches your balance. Whichever name you searched for — a Stripe fees calculator, a Stripe charge calculator or a Stripe processing fee calculator — the maths is identical, and it is the maths this page does. The calculator above applies this formula:
Stripe fee = charge amount × 2.9% + $0.30You receive = charge amount − Stripe feeTwo add-ons change the percentage. A card issued outside the US adds 1.5%, taking the rate to 4.4% + $0.30. If Stripe also has to convert the payment currency into your payout currency, a further 1% applies (5.4% + $0.30 in total). In-person payments through Stripe Terminal use a lower rate of 2.7% + $0.05.
To work out what to charge when you need a specific amount to land in your account, the calculator’s reverse mode rearranges the same formula: charge = (amount you want + $0.30) ÷ (1 − 0.029), rounded up to the next cent so you never fall short.

Stripe fees by country
Sellers outside the US pay Stripe’s local standard rate instead. The headline online card rates for the countries our visitors ask about most:

Worked examples
Example 1 — a $100 online sale to a US customer
| Charge amount | $100.00 |
| Stripe fee (2.9% + $0.30) | $3.20 |
| You receive | $96.80 |
| Effective fee rate | 3.20% |
The fixed $0.30 is why the effective rate (3.20%) sits above the headline 2.9%.
Example 2 — a $250 online sale paid with an international card
| Charge amount | $250.00 |
| Stripe fee (4.4% + $0.30) | $11.30 |
| You receive | $238.70 |
| Effective fee rate | 4.52% |
The 1.5% international surcharge alone adds $3.75 compared with a domestic card.
Example 3 — you need exactly $500 to land in your account (reverse mode)
| You should charge | $515.25 |
| Stripe fee (2.9% + $0.30) | $15.24 |
| You receive | $500.01 |
| Effective fee rate | 2.96% |
Charging $515.25 leaves $500.01 after fees — the extra cent is the round-up that guarantees you hit your target.
When these fees apply — and the limitations
The rates above are Stripe’s standard US pricing for card payments. They apply when:
- you are on standard pricing rather than a custom or negotiated plan (large-volume businesses can negotiate lower rates);
- the payment is a card payment — ACH Direct Debit, wires and other payment methods are priced differently;
- no add-on products apply — Stripe Billing, Radar fraud protection, Tax and similar products carry their own fees on top.
Two costs sit outside this calculator entirely: a disputed payment (chargeback) currently carries a dispute fee whether you win or lose, and a refunded payment returns the amount to the customer but Stripe does not return the original processing fee. If your business refunds often, that second point can cost more than the headline rate suggests. Always confirm the current figures on Stripe’s own pricing page before relying on them for pricing decisions.
Comparing your options
The comparison most sellers want is Stripe vs PayPal: PayPal’s standard US commercial rate is 3.49% + $0.49, so on a $100 payment PayPal keeps $3.98 against Stripe’s $3.20 — a difference of $0.78 on every sale. Square’s online rate of 3.3% + $0.30 lands between them at $3.60. Frequently asked questions
How much does Stripe charge per transaction?
On standard US pricing, Stripe charges 2.9% + $0.30 per successful online card payment. A $100 payment therefore costs $3.20, a $50 payment $1.75, and a $10 payment $0.59. International cards cost 4.4% + $0.30, and in-person Terminal payments cost 2.7% + $0.05.
Why is my effective Stripe rate higher than 2.9%?
Because of the fixed $0.30. It is charged on every transaction regardless of size, so on a $10 payment it adds 3% on its own and pushes the effective rate to 5.9%. International cards (+1.5%) and currency conversion (+1%) raise it further. The smaller your average order, the more the fixed fee dominates.
Does Stripe charge monthly or setup fees?
Standard Stripe pricing has no monthly fee, no setup fee and no minimum term — you only pay per transaction. Optional products such as Stripe Billing (for subscriptions), Radar (fraud protection) and Stripe Tax are charged separately, usually as a percentage of the transactions they touch.
Can I pass the Stripe fee on to my customers?
You can price so that the fee is covered — the reverse mode above works out the charge that leaves you a target amount — but directly adding a card surcharge at checkout is restricted: card network rules and many US state laws limit or regulate surcharging, and Stripe’s own terms require compliance with those rules. Most businesses simply build the fee into their prices instead. This is general information, not legal advice.
How do I calculate the Stripe fee by hand?
Multiply the charge by 0.029 and add $0.30. For a $100 charge: $100 × 2.9% = $2.90, plus $0.30, equals a $3.20 fee and a $96.80 payout. For an international card, multiply by 0.044 instead and add the same $0.30.
