How much does Stripe charge in the UK?

Stripe’s standard UK price is 1.5% + 20p per online payment with a UK-issued card, and 2.5% + 20p for cards issued in the European Economic Area. On £100 that is a fee of £1.70 with a UK card or £2.70 with a European card, leaving you £98.30 or £97.30. There is no monthly fee on standard UK pricing.

How it works

Stripe’s standard UK pricing follows the same shape as everywhere else — a percentage plus a fixed fee per payment — but the percentages are lower than in the US, and they depend on where the customer’s card was issued. Whether you searched for Stripe fees UK, a Stripe charge calculator or Stripe pricing in pounds, this is the calculation you need:

Stripe fee (UK card) = charge amount × 1.5% + 20p
Stripe fee (European card) = charge amount × 2.5% + 20p
You receive = charge amount − Stripe fee

Cards issued outside the UK and Europe are charged at a higher rate again, and converting a payment made in another currency into pounds adds a conversion fee — Stripe’s UK pricing page lists the current figures for both. The reverse mode above rearranges the formula — charge = (amount you want + 20p) ÷ (1 − rate) — so you can price a job or product to land an exact amount after fees.

Comparing your options

The usual UK comparison is Stripe vs PayPal: PayPal’s standard UK commercial rate is 2.9% + 30p — nearly double Stripe’s percentage — so on a £100 payment PayPal keeps £3.20 against Stripe’s £1.70. Frequently asked questions

How much does Stripe charge in the UK?

Stripe’s standard UK pricing is 1.5% + 20p per online payment with a UK-issued card, and 2.5% + 20p for cards issued in the European Economic Area. On a £100 payment that is a fee of £1.70 (UK card) or £2.70 (European card).

Why is Stripe cheaper in the UK than in the US?

Mainly because of interchange costs. Card networks charge merchants much less to process cards issued in the UK and Europe — where interchange fees are capped by regulation — than cards issued in the US. Stripe’s standard US rate is 2.9% + $0.30, compared with 1.5% + 20p in the UK.

Does Stripe UK charge a monthly fee?

No. Standard Stripe pricing in the UK has no monthly or setup fee; you pay per transaction only. Paid extras like Stripe Billing, Radar and premium support are charged separately if you use them.

How do I work out what to charge so I receive a set amount?

Use the reverse mode above. The maths is: charge = (amount you want + £0.20) ÷ (1 − 0.015) for a UK card. To receive £200, for example, you charge £203.25, the fee is £3.25, and exactly £200.00 lands in your balance.

Are Stripe’s UK fees charged on the full amount including VAT?

Yes — like all card processors, Stripe calculates its fee on the total amount the customer pays, including any VAT and shipping you charge. The fee itself is also subject to VAT treatment depending on your circumstances; your accountant can confirm how it applies to your business.
