Shopify Fee Calculator

With Shopify Payments switched on, Shopify’s per-sale cost is the card rate for your plan: 2.9% + 30¢ on Basic, 2.7% + 30¢ on Grow and 2.5% + 30¢ on Advanced — and no extra Shopify transaction fee on top. On Basic, a $100 order costs $3.20. Pick your plan and enter an order amount to see your exact fee.

How much does Shopify charge per sale?

When you use Shopify Payments, Shopify charges only the card processing rate for your plan: 2.9% + 30¢ per online order on Basic, 2.7% + 30¢ on Grow and 2.5% + 30¢ on Advanced — there is no additional transaction fee. If you use a third-party payment gateway instead, Shopify adds a transaction fee on every sale (2% on Basic, 1% on Grow, 0.6% on Advanced) on top of that gateway’s own charges. Your monthly plan subscription is separate.

How it works

Shopify’s fees confuse people because three different charges get mixed up: the monthly plan, the card processing rate, and the transaction fee that only applies to outside gateways. This calculator covers the one you pay on every sale with Shopify Payments — whether you searched for a Shopify fee calculator, Shopify transaction fees or Shopify Payments rates:

Card fee (Basic) = order amount × 2.9% + 30¢
Card fee (Grow) = order amount × 2.7% + 30¢
Card fee (Advanced) = order amount × 2.5% + 30¢
You receive = order amount − card fee

The crucial fact: using Shopify Payments removes Shopify’s separate transaction fee entirely. The transaction fee only appears if you check out through a third-party gateway, where Shopify charges 2% (Basic), 1% (Grow) or 0.6% (Advanced) of the order on top of whatever that gateway charges you. For almost every store, activating Shopify Payments is the single largest fee saving available.

Worked examples

Example 1 — a $100 order on the Basic plan

Order amount$100.00
Shopify Payments fee (2.9% + 30¢)$3.20
You receive$96.80
Effective fee rate3.20%

Example 2 — a $500 order on the Advanced plan

Order amount$500.00
Shopify Payments fee (2.5% + 30¢)$12.80
You receive$487.20
Effective fee rate2.56%

At $500 of order value, the Advanced plan’s lower percentage has saved $2.20 against Basic on this single order — plan upgrades start paying for themselves at a few thousand dollars of monthly sales.

Example 3 — a $59 order on the Grow plan

Order amount$59.00
Shopify Payments fee (2.7% + 30¢)$1.89
You receive$57.11
Effective fee rate3.20%

When these fees apply — and the limitations

Comparing your options

For Shopify vs Etsy on the same $100 of product: your own Shopify store on Basic keeps $96.80, while Etsy keeps about $90.05 — a gap of nearly $7 per $100, every sale. The trade-off is traffic: Etsy brings buyers, Shopify does not. That is why established Etsy sellers often run both, and why this site has an Etsy fee calculator next to this one. If you take payments without Shopify at all, compare Stripe’s 2.9% + $0.30, which matches Basic’s rate.

Frequently asked questions

Does Shopify take a percentage of every sale?

Only the payment processing percentage, and only because card payments cost money to process: 2.9% + 30¢ on Basic with Shopify Payments. Shopify does not take an additional sales commission when you use Shopify Payments. A separate transaction fee percentage (2%, 1% or 0.6% by plan) applies only when you use an outside payment gateway instead.

What happens if I don’t use Shopify Payments?

Two layers of cost instead of one: your gateway charges its processing fee (for example PayPal’s 3.49% + $0.49), and Shopify adds its transaction fee on top — 2% of the order on Basic, 1% on Grow, 0.6% on Advanced. On a $100 Basic order paid via PayPal that stack comes to roughly $5.98, against $3.20 with Shopify Payments.

Is it worth upgrading my Shopify plan just for the lower card rate?

Do the arithmetic on your volume: moving from Basic (2.9%) to Grow (2.7%) saves 0.2% of sales. If the plan price difference is covered by 0.2% of your monthly revenue, the upgrade pays for itself on processing alone — that happens at roughly five hundred times the monthly price gap in monthly sales. The calculator on our break-even page can help: enter the plan difference as a fixed cost.

How much are Shopify fees on $1,000 of sales?

On Basic with Shopify Payments, a single $1,000 order costs $29.30 (2.9% + 30¢), leaving $970.70. Ten separate $100 orders cost slightly more in total — $32.00 — because the 30¢ fixed fee is paid ten times. Order count matters, not just revenue.

Does Shopify charge for refunds?

When you refund an order, the customer gets their money back but the original card processing fee is not returned to you, in line with most processors. On a high-refund-rate store that invisible cost can rival the plan subscription, so it is worth factoring into prices.
